if only there was some alternative approach than “trust a random unaccountable instance”. if only people had been researching this for years while being ridiculed for being “technolibertarians” or “idealistic cypherpunks”. if only there was a technology for trust automation

RT @dystopiabreaker
wow really, someone bad bought a centralized application? and is now doing bad things with it? damn, if only there was some sort of research group where people thought long and hard about enclosure of commons, decentralization, etc, and studied the failures of the past

RT @dystopiabreaker
cool to see people who have historically hated decentralized systems, crypto and also tor etc, suddenly become interested in decentralized social media but mostly ignore criticisms laid by people who have cared about that long before elon bought twitter

RT @pee_zombie
this is more or less true of Mastodon, and the broader fediverse at large; there are many points on the decentralization spectrum, and feudalism is one of them twitter.com/dystopiabreaker/st

RT @pee_zombie
the core issue is that there's an inherent tradeoff btwn freedom & convenience; twitter represents one extreme of that spectrum & ssb another. Mastodon lies somewhere in the middle: u have the freedom to choose ur lord, but u still don't have full control

RT @pee_zombie
the relevant question is, which types of freedom do u value & what tradeoffs are u willing to make for them? how much are you willing to sacrifice for ur values? do you really care about maximal decentralization, or do u care more specifically about not being at twitter's mercy?

I don't believe AI is fundamentally bad. But, proprietary AI must be fundamentally bad. AI needs to be open-source, widely accessible, and publicly auditable. Without these, then yes, AI will just be a tool for capitalists to screw over people. But an democratized AI will transform the way we think about human creativity just like how camera did.

TIL: There is a cursed color in the Kodak ProPhoto RGB color space which, when converted to sRGB using pre-August-2020-Security-Update Android's image conversion routines, causes an integer overflow and a crash due to a rounding error. Some dude accidentally created an image (flickr.com/photos/gaurav_agraw) which contains the cursed color on a single pixel. In 2020 if you set this image as your desktop on a Google or Samsung device, the device would brick & lose all onboard data youtube.com/watch?v=iXKvwPjCGn
