@niplav same same same!

this is more or less true of Mastodon, and the broader fediverse at large; there are many points on the decentralization spectrum, and feudalism is one of them https://twitter.com/dystopiabreaker/status/1605011738138550273

the core issue is that there's an inherent tradeoff btwn freedom & convenience; twitter represents one extreme of that spectrum & ssb another. Mastodon lies somewhere in the middle: u have the freedom to choose ur lord, but u still don't have full control

the relevant question is, which types of freedom do u value & what tradeoffs are u willing to make for them? how much are you willing to sacrifice for ur values? do you really care about maximal decentralization, or do u care more specifically about not being at twitter's mercy?
@andrew true, btw check out second post from the top
I don't believe AI is fundamentally bad. But, proprietary AI must be fundamentally bad. AI needs to be open-source, widely accessible, and publicly auditable. Without these, then yes, AI will just be a tool for capitalists to screw over people. But an democratized AI will transform the way we think about human creativity just like how camera did.
TIL: There is a cursed color in the Kodak ProPhoto RGB color space which, when converted to sRGB using pre-August-2020-Security-Update Android's image conversion routines, causes an integer overflow and a crash due to a rounding error. Some dude accidentally created an image (https://www.flickr.com/photos/gaurav_agrawal/48746079687/) which contains the cursed color on a single pixel. In 2020 if you set this image as your desktop on a Google or Samsung device, the device would brick & lose all onboard data https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXKvwPjCGnY
