Update. "#Harvard University sued the #Trump administration in federal court Monday…The lawsuit…seeks to block the Trump administration from withholding federal funding 'as leverage to gain control of academic decision making at Harvard.' Alan M. Garber, the president of Harvard, said in a message to the university community Monday that the Trump administration’s actions are unlawful and beyond the government’s authority."

PS. Exactly. Every university subject to this kind of unlawful pressure should sue. Same for law firms.

"After freezing all grants to #Columbia University last week, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is now stopping grant and contract payments to Harvard University and four other universities [#Brown, #Northwestern, #Cornell, #WeillCornell Medical School]…The move will both block new funding and halt payments to investigators currently working on NIH projects…The Department of Health and Human Services (#HHS)…instructed NIH staff not to provide any communication to these institutions or to Columbia about whether the funds are frozen or why, according to the email."

So let's see: Some unknown person in the Trump administration sent an unauthorized letter to Harvard with a list of demands, then froze Harvard's funding without authorization, and made an unauthorized request to the IRS to revoke Harvard's tax-exempt status. Trump better catch whoever is doing all this quick.

This NYT article about how the #Trump Admin now tries to back out of their fight with #Harvard shows two items:

1) The letter was already written. They would have sent it anyway:

'the letter was supposed to be sent at some point, just not on Friday when the dialogue between the two sides was still constructive, one of the people said.'

2) There is no regret:

'And despite claiming that the letter should not have been sent, the Trump administration did not withdraw it.'

“Harvard didn’t blink. The fight starts here,” writes @Daojoan for her Index newsletter. “[It] did not act quickly. But it acted clearly. That clarity must be contagious. Because unless every university in America is ready to say no to federal ideological coercion, this moment will not be a line in the sand. It will be a footnote in the obituary of academic freedom,” she writes. “The government has already decided it can control the curriculum by controlling the cash. What happens next is not up to them. It's up to everyone else.”

#Harvard is about to bury the #DoJ under miles & miles of paper.

They should start revoking the #degrees held by any #fascist lawmakers that graduated there.

If #Columbia can do it, why not?

#IRS making plans to rescind #Harvard’s tax-exempt status after the university refusal of #Trump admin demands for control over course contents, admissions, etc.

“Law professor Sam Brunson noted on Bluesky that this is illegal.

“In 1998, Congress explicitly provided that the President could not, directly or indirectly, request that the IRS start or end an audit or other investigation of a taxpayer.”

#TaxExempt status is available to charitable, religious & #educational orgs, as well as social welfare groups. But the organizations must strictly adhere to tax laws that prohibit them from engaging in certain political activity. There is NO proof that #Harvard violated any of those guardrails.

“The #IRS is supposed to administer the tax rules impartially, not pursue political #vendettas against exempt organizations,”said Steve Rosenthal, who served as snr fellow at the #TaxPolicy Center.
