Rest in Peace, Val Kilmer.
I will always remember how hard you made me laugh in Top Secret. I wish you'd had the chance to do more outright comedies, you were way funnier than Hollywood gave you credit for.
I got thinking about "The Tower That Ate People" because of what is turning into my #SnoopListens thread¹ and the only reason I know of this song and really Peter Gabriel's solo work is because this song (quite briefly!) features in RED PLANET, a #ValKilmer film.
People are rightfully gushing about REAL GENIUS and BATMAN and TOP GUN all the other great movies he was in, but I guess RED PLANET is where I'm at right now. Might spin it up for some company as I slog through some more debugging.
I can't find a clip of it online, but there's a bit where the song is playing and Val Kilmer is jamming out doing his "space janitor" thing. It's great.
Overall a really entertaining movie with a star-studded cast and a plot that is stupid, but not TOO stupid.

From real geniuses to rock stars, Iceman to Batman…
Rolling Stone“It’s a moral imperative.”: Sad to see the news of Val Kilmer's death. While he did a lot of good stuff over the years, my personal favorite is and has always been one of his earlier films, Real Genius. https://michaelhans.com/eclecticism/2025/04/02/its-a-moral-imperative
@arstechnica RIP #ValKilmer Thanks for all the laughs and entertainment.
A friend of a friend was a pretty successful costume tech in the film industry and she worked on the movie 'Tombstone' (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108358/).
She said that Val was annoying as heck, the only one on the cast who was 'difficult'.
But you can't deny he was brilliant - and this was when he was quite young. I think he really grew in his personal life - always staying a little strange.
Woulda been nice if he'd had more time with us.
Real Genius was one of those formative anarchistic experiences in my youth that should be required viewing for anyone going into STEM.
Now more than ever we need scientists who have the courage to sabotage US defence projects and destroy the homes of assholes with popcorn.
I Toxic Waste too, Val
@GeePawHill Kilmer was a one-of-a-kind. Everyone who grew up with his films needs to see the documentary Val. Fella had a great big heart
