things are likely to work better when people have tried them a lot and there is community/accumulated wisdom
but people have tried a lot more things than you think

the one time i've seen the 'people being pressured into poly because it's the enlightened thing to do' failure mode the person responsible was a radfemmy friend who didn't really know other poly people.
similarly bdsm is great but you shouldn't be learning to do it from porn.
