do opioid addicts even like being addicted or is it just a system 1 need-drug-now thing
i feel like the second is pretty solvable without limiting patient autonomy

Show thread

man there has to be a better solution to opioid addiction then "make doctors a cartel"

What happens when physicians face new competition from expanded scope of practice for nurse-practitioners?

Physicians hand out more prescriptions for addictive painkillers and for combo prescriptions of opioids opioids and benzodiazepines. 😬😬😬

maybe the correct way to design this as a social technology is to start out as making it a sex party and then iterate tamewards

I suspect there's a tendency when doing this sort of thing to forget/discourage that discomfort is an emotion that belongs at the table too

ea rat culture should be more careful with weird shit, for weird shit = circling, radical honesty, maybe? :P

i didn't realise i was allowed to ask for things asking for things sounds scary

there's a weird autistic traumabrain difference between how easy it is to say
"can I kiss you?"
vs
"i'd quite like to kiss you"

“Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect."

(also "are people who have X opinion Same Tribe or Enemy Tribe")

Show thread

now we get arguments about "are people who commit crimes Same Tribe or Enemy Tribe" instead of like actual practicalities

Show thread

man i feel like the way our criminal justice system works is trying to direct the part of our brain that used to think about Enemy Tribe towards criminals and therefore completely borked our ability to think about morality

@xphilosopher seems to me social punishment is much more likely to serve some other purpose (community is audience and this helps the community understand a norm/prevent future harm from this …

seems difficult to draw a principled line between it being ok to tie kids up (assuming clothes remain on) and it being ok to tickle kids, except people are much more familiar with one of these things

"let's teach kids how to do kink (for some values of kink)" seems like an excellent weirdtopian proposal at the very least tbh

Love it when you get articles solemnly intoning that "The Right is waging war on literature", & claiming that conservatives just hate book-larnin', then you check which volume has actually been removed from a school library, & it's "Bondage: A Guide For 9 Year Olds" or something.

Over the years I’ve heard many stories from girls in the chess community regarding often prominent men in our industry. When encouraged to speak up, most are worried that the backlash and lack of consequences will render doing so pointless. 1/5 twitter.com/jenshahade/status/

even if it's against newspaper policy you run into the "so fire me, i am sure that will give you a reputation for being very free speech" problem

Show thread

tbh this seems like an enormous improvement on the previous method of complaining about media bias which was "i will quit this newspaper and urge no trans person to talk to you so you can't write positive pieces even if you wanted to"
that seemed ... counterproductive
