Without plain text #search #Mastodon will be a place I visit now and then.

Without that level of #indexing it requires too much work on an individual level to add #hashtags to get #content to #surface.

I guess that would require a centralised #service that connects to an ever increasing web of #server nodes? Unless there's another #decentralised way to do it?

Anyways, if you see this, please #boost it if you agree, so we can see if the feeling is mutual across the :mastodon: :fediverse:

@EmmaDingle I think I read that somebody did start trying to index it for search-as-a-service/bot, and there was considerable community pushback so they stopped again quite quickly.

@denny

Maybe an opt-in opt-out of search would work to accommodate those who don't want the social aspect of this social network to be too social?

@EmmaDingle Mayyyybe... how does that differ from sticking tags on your content though?

@denny
Well I would have been able to look up the word "Mayyyybe" for a start 😉

It would help with tracking phrases, rather than single words, or compound hashtag words.

It would also help with finding and blocking/defederating botnets/sockpuppets which copy the same messaging to lots of accounts to steer public opinion. Without being able to track them it's a perfect cover for astroturfing and propaganda.

@EmmaDingle @denny If it's opt-in then I guess those botnets won't opt in though :(
