Stuart Shanker describes how quieting these two areas is "priming for priming."
The Ramachandran brain encyclopedia describes, at various points, the relationship of the two areas. The delivery of dorsolateral prefrontal inputs to the cingulate cortex seems to provide the motivational impulse for internally-defined task sequences.
