I think Mastodon people should use the "like" button more.
People are told not to like because liking doesn't broadcast posts like boosting does, and the site needs boosts. And replies are preferred because they're deeper engagement or something.
But, on some level, we want people to keep using Mastodon. If someone posts something and followers like it, they know stuff is getting seen here and they'll want to keep using the site. I just don't see what's gained by holding back on the likes

I don't think I _HAVE_ a like button. The star icon in my Mastodon instance is labeled "Favourite", which implies that it saves it for my own use, not that it is visible to anyone else.
@dagon @etoani @design_law See, I've never been aware that there's an established distinction between "like" and "favorite" that has to do with whether or not that action is visible to other people. I just thought it was basically arbitrarily different language for the same action (an action some sites treat slightly differently). I'll look out for that distinction more
