Chesterton's gut says that you shouldn't try to consciously override an intuition unless you can explain where it came from and why it's wrong; much ills come from ignoring our gut instincts bc they disagree with our stated beliefs.

this is especially true when it comes to instincts about people; our subconscious is much more experienced than our explicit reasoning faculty, having been trained over a lifetime. if you get a bad feeling about someone, it's probably right.
