@hermes i also think your choice of server determines your experience here pretty hard. since there’s no algorithmic network effects it’s all voluntary self-association, you want to fill your local timeline with friendly faces. i was on mastodon.social before it was just “twitter but worse”. best to treat it as a different approach entirely
@phil__harmonic @hermes i think servers actually become pretty unimportant once you follow a handful of people. it’s just hard to find them in the first place if you’re on some barren mastodon gmbh server with 100k people
@hermes it’s just crazy to me that people would jump ship to some randomass invite only app whilst migrating all of “tpot” here would literally just involve everyone putting their mastodon @ on a shared csv that you can simply import to immediately replicate the whole operation
@pujz tpot is a summer camp cult thats why
@hermes the more that is different, the more things are the same
@pujz yesh thats one thing i actually DONT love but understand how and why it works this way.
frontloading community choice vs ambiently building the spcial graph
@hermes @pujz I’m talking actual Mastodon People, though. There are like 5 million people posting here, like for years. Photo posters. People who’s entire thing is “the junkyard down the street from my house.” The bot game is up to speed. It’s a real place! Unlike bsky, which seems to be in an arms race between becoming a real place and being completely colonized by auto-following bitcoin shitlords.
@phil__harmonic @taalumot @hermes this is what set me off a bit. natural to be excited about finding a new place (i clearly am right now!) but there’s something suspect and sanctimonious when all that people talk about is how amazing this new app is
@pujz @phil__harmonic @hermes whereas this is the longest conversation I’ve ever had about Mastodon on Mastodon, which is not to say I haven’t had INTERMINABLE conversations about Mastodon in Twitter DMs
@phil__harmonic @pujz @hermes gdi phil
@taalumot @phil__harmonic this cracked me Up
@pujz @phil__harmonic @taalumot
there's genuinely nothing to talk about on there except the thing itself
@pujz @hermes everybody follow @iraantlers, he will point out the way
@hermes i sure hope it does
@jaysunkei @hermes @pujz Ah, but you can https://stoat.zone/@taalumot/110169775751213043
@taalumot ooh I didn't realize there was a difference between apps regarding this. 🙏
@jaysunkei I have faith that, over time, there won’t be
@hermes this would be a non-compromise with a bit of scale. you’d have ambient expansion of the social graph by seeing new posters your friends interact with/retweet, the only thing you’re losing is the promoted shit, ghoulish algo hell which shows you stuff you hate to drive engagement, and now pay-to-win multipliers that favour the banal and obedient
@pujz @hermes I have for now opted to ignore the server scene entirely and look at chronological posts from people I follow, but it’s nice that I can move to (or make) one in the future
