I suspect the normie answer to this is they don't. Adaptations are subconscious enough that they do not diverge from normal personality/character progression. It's only masking if it creates a non-converging divide between outer manifestation vs instinctual/flow response (cont.)

at the extra cost of having to build/maintain the cognitive model & its agents explicitly, stripping them of real agency in the process. Being good enough at this to satisfy expectations is in this sense a curse. Worse, it is a trainable skill, although model building can be fun.
