maybe after getting beat up because you admitted the truth of the matter you might actually be in a better position to negotiate with what you actually can pay

maybe they might even accept that failed attempts count for more than fear-motivated non-attempts, even if slightly and actually it's in their interest to support you on this

maybe the mere action of trying to do something will always find a way to be valuable one way or another regardless of the outcome

maybe there is intrinsic value in the attempt itself
