One of the fascinating things the current discourse throws into sharp relief is the way in which the following ideas:
* self-determination: a people have the right to govern themselves as they please (even when the result is *not* a democracy)
and
* a people are not their government and should not be held responsible for its actions (even when it *is* a democracy)
manage to coexist in the same heads.
