another not well appreciated thing, the "winters" of an engineering field seem to be when all the useful foundational work is done, sorta like the basic ideas underpinning a field only change when people can work quietly twitter.com/sigfig/status/1379

RT @sigfig
a not well appreciated thing, the role of spaceflight wrt to society isn't very gradual, there's a lot of slow engineering and operations buildup, but the way the world at large thinks about it has always changed suddenly and severely twitter.com/sigfig/status/1379

Possibly dumb microeconomics question: heuristically, when is expected utility theory a good model, and when do you need to bring in something like prospect theory? I get the idea that people are never "truly" rational, but when does it tend to be a decent approximation?

Writing the electromagnetic field as a complex function we can rewrite Maxwell's equations more simply and thereby better see its invariance under the gauge group U(1) (which is the unit circle in the complex plane).

I found it confusing at first, but FreeCAD is growing on me.

seeing a fresh resurgence of people talking about how transhumanism is bad/satanic

once again have that awful feeling that if I'd peered deeply enough into the Vigilant Citizen blog in 2012 I would have been able to predict the entire decade, but would have shattered my psyche

subjectively it feels like a relaxation of tension, something moving downward from my solar plexus to my diaphragm

I've been doing 2-2:30 breath holds lately- just focusing on arousal control, not doing deliberate CO2 tolerance training (no apnea tables) and I'm getting better at relaxing deliberately, without the breathing cue

Show thread

but freedivers put a lot of emphasis on stress/arousal control during a breath hold, and that seems really interesting as well.

these are really helpful, as it's one of a couple of places you can hook into your autonomous nervous system

question to the void: does anyone know much about breathing practices/breath holds for stress/anxiety management? most of the techniques I know focus on breathing itself- breath rate control, nasal breathing as a mental point of focus, etc.

going to find out this gives me lip cancer or some shit in 20 years

Show thread

man, three rounds of wim hof breathing is always a trip

rolling partner caught me in some kind of modified bow and arrow choke last night that was about 75-80% of the way in, but not quite there, and I started essentially snoring while awake trying to breathe while I fought free

related: my throat hurts today

Once again, I am reminded how much of business/admin is just doing small, boring, straightforward tasks reliably.

(and how bad I am at that)
