>>> Heat. This is what cities mean to me. You get off the train and walk out of the station and you are hit with the full blast. The heat of air, traffic and people. The heat of food and sex. The heat of tall buildings. The heat that flows out of the subways and tunnels. It's always fifteen degrees hotter in the cities. Heat rises from the sidewalks and falls from the poisoned sky. The buses breathe heat. Heat emanates from crowds of shoppers and office workers, the entire infrastructure is based on heat, desperately uses up heat, breeds more heat. The eventual heat death of the universe that scientists love to talk about is already well underway and you can feel it happening all around you in any large or medium-sized city. Heat and wetness.

@why @georgia >living to 130

That's not very much at all, outliving the universe is the goal

Imagine if you turn out to be able to beat the market!

One can not search across all of one's chatgpt chats. This is unsatisfying.

Pleased to announce the newest Mastodon feature on woof.group: antitemporal quote toots. Simply write a new toot and click the retrocausal boost 🔃 button below the text field, then select any existing toot from your feed. That existing toot will be altered to embed your new toot, as if it had been quoting you all along.

We're trusting our users to be polite when anti-quoting strangers' toots, so please, be kind! ❤️🙏✨

I observe often that I don't care as much about participating in topics that were past battles of previous internet generations—e.g. IQ & heritability fights, eugenics fights, open borders fights, feminism/harassment fights, privacy fights &c. But there surely was the second-to-last internet generation that fought different battles—what were they? I can think of encryption wars (Bernstein vs. US gov), abortion (?), atheism & religion of course, which others?

The solution to sexual harassment in a community is that all the men become romantically and sexually formidable outside of the community. Every other solution results in too much repression, or in clumsy advances, or in a suboptimal number of romantic and sexual relationships

Silence does not speak. Nature does not speak. Even God is silent, except perhaps in the voice that humans find in themselves in the presence of God's silence.

People will argue against this. They will insist that silence bears meaning, and they will tell you what it means. People will say that nature speaks constantly in terms perfectly compatible with contemporary conversations. People will even say that their words are the words of God.
They are all liars and you do not have to respect them

I don't make threats online, not because I don't want to, but because I'd never be able to follow through on them

I love imagining the mathematical needs of whoever decided on the unicode math characters.

"Gosh, I'm just always needing notation for when two lines are sorta-but-not-completely perpendicular. I know! ⫡"

"What if something's not just bigger than or much bigger than but WAY FUCKING BIGGER THAN? Aha: ⫸"

"I'm doing so many specialized contour integrals and hate writing with words so much that I'm going to invent a specific symbol for line integration with rectangular path around a pole: ⨒"

"I don't know whether A is a subset of B or B is a subset of A, but at least one of those statements is true, so... A ⫓ B."

"Gosh, I have this element S of the Picard group of a symmetric monoidal category and I want to tensor M with the tensor-inverse of S but don't want to create notation for the tensor inverse. As such, consider M⨸S."
