this one time I went to a witchy bazaar thing w an ex and had to leave v quickly bc I basically started panicking from the sheer overwhelming memetic pressure of the divergent epistemics I was surrounded by; there's a downside to being sensitive to that sort of thing.

Show thread

I don't begrudge anyone their coping mechanisms but tbh talking to people like this makes me deeply, viscerally uncomfortable, to the point I've had lil panic attacks induced by pondering the depth of our epistemic delta.

there's 2-3 of you on here I respect for ur approach tho

if this is a matter of metabolic tradeoffs, raising the cost of compliance shifts the equilibrium

maybe the only way out of public health authoritarianism is through

Show thread

for this set of constraints, it's perfectly rational to favor overly stringent precautions over updating their beliefs, as the metabolic cost of the latter most likely outweighs the burden imposed by the former

perhaps med/acceleration can address this

Show thread

this naive epistemology is much simpler computationally and hence metabolically; facts being a. static and b. binary, means they don't need to run background watchdog processes continuously error-checking their beliefs against new data. lightly-held opinions are more expensive!

Show thread

specifics aside, I'm thinking about how this tendency to not update relates to the v binary way many people approach learning; internalizing a new fact is a one-way state transition, bc in their minds social reality perfectly mirrors physical. in fact, they don't even see a diff!

I hope everyone gets this at some point in their lives, hopefully before they truly need it. pushing through the pain to do what you gotta do is one of the hardest lessons to learn, but getting through to that other side unlocks incredible power. that power is called anger. twitter.com/visakanv/status/14

@quotidiania yeah... this is tricky stuff. I think a lot of us get caught up in trying to match up to women's expectations, but that's a losing game; to me, masculinity is about taking responsibility for yourself into your own hands & deciding how it is you want to live, how to support others

@LucreSnooker @michaelcurzi we clearly have different detentions of masculinity; in my view being a man is about prioritizing providing for those you care about over your own needs, including ego

@lisatomic5 yeah those are great. I definitely agree with parts of this; for me, masculinity is inextricably linked with awareness of my power and the responsibility to temper it application

masculinity inherently entails some amount of asociality, frontier-building, forging paths; agency outside the confines of a structure, not dependent on group consensus. femininity relates to working within those confines, community building, paving paths, fostering consensus
