@TetraspaceGrouping some aspects of Mastodon feel like someone thought it shouldn't be *too much* of an improvement over Twitter for some reason :)
Perhaps they are extensible/upgradable? I need to look at the protocol/implementation, I mean to but I haven't gotten to it.
@flancian @TetraspaceGrouping the underlying protocol is ActivityPub and its pretty flexible! there are quite a few other apps running on it, such as PixelFed (Instagram clone) and Write.Freely (Medium clone), and they can all interact with each other. there are forks of Masto which modify features like this!

Oh, good to know, thank you! I was aware of [[activitypub]] but I hadn't realized that it was Mastodon's protocol! That's truly great news. I'll read the standard with renewed interest :)
