Hey fedi surely you have opinions on laptops

Follow

Context: I'm thinking about getting a new one in the price range 200€-400€ and was looking for recommendations

@niplav in that range would you consider used ones? And do you expect to haul it around or be used as a main computer? I have a strong preference towards light laptops and had good experience with zenbook ux305CA. Beware - ram not upgradable, no fan, no type C.

@rip_imho
It would be my main machine after this one fails

Thanks for the recomendation!

@rip_imho @niplav I second refurbished laptop recommendation. I've bought several and never once had issues. Sometimes they're brand new and sold as refurbished because a store dropped the line or ordered too many of a specific unit. You can get a high end unit from last gen for like 65% off MSRP.

@BowsacNoodle @rip_imho a friend recommended a refurbished T480 which I'm very inclined towards

@niplav @rip_imho Those are solid. I still have one that's like 10 years old and kicking. I swapped an SSD in and, I think, upgraded the RAM and it's been perfect.

@niplav Make sure they have a free slot to add ram later on.

@dushman probably void linux

Or 9front or smth until my current laptop fails

@niplav
Get an old thinkpad, repaste it and upgrade to an ssd if it doesn't come with one.
@niplav
Anything that's 400€ new will fall apart pretty quickly lel
