not only is it vaguely distasteful but also just kind of lazy & boring? if you're going to go for that argument at least be interesting & fully commit to ur physiognomy. map their features to cognitive biases. catalogue the ways their nature was genetically predetermined. cmon

I love documentation, so I've written a bunch of docs about labyrinth.social, the small invite-only instance I run.
In putting it together, I looked at a lot of other instances to see what kind of docs and policies they had, so now I want to pay it forward and put it out there for others to use as a basis.
If you run a small instance or are thinking of doing so, feel free to repurpose what I've put together!
somewhere out there there's a conference room full of people dressed much nicer than you and I which admittedly is a very easy bar to clear because I'm just wearing my pajamas and anyways they've got a big pad of paper on an easel that has the word "mastodon" written on it in big red letters and "mastodon" is circled several times with the same red marker and nobody in the room can figure out what "mastodon" is and why the company isn't making any money from it toot toot
Are you using Mastodon through a computer?
Do you wish there was a multi-column TweetDeck-style interface?
There is! It's called the "advanced web interface" and you can activate it any time you want. It lets you add many specialised columns, subscribe to hashtags and all kinds of stuff suited to large wide displays.
Log into the website, go to Preferences > Enable Advanced Web Interface, tick the box and click "Save Changes".
(To restore the default single column interface, do the same thing but untick the box instead.)
This used to be the default interface on Mastodon, and very old articles about the platform will have screenshots of the multicolumn interface.
About instances and migration:
If you feel that you've picked the wrong instance, want to be in a smaller/bigger local community or just for reasons, you can move your profile!
There are different kinds of migrations and you can keep your follows, followers, etc. And your account will be (optionally) frozen and with redirections (keep in mind that there are cache systems that may prevent to migrate to new accounts for a couple of days after created).
More details here https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/moving/#migration
Remember that you can mute someone for a fixed amount of time.
Is someone posting about something you don't really wanna see in your feed right now? Boosting too much? Generally making you anxious?
You can mute someone for a few hours or days, after which they'll show up in your feed again.
There's a lot of new people joining right now and if all the new energy is making you a bit stressed or anxious, don't be afraid to mute people for a while 💚🌻🍂
There's a thread where someone talks about all of the things they hate about Mastodon, and that it's not for them. That's great! It's definitely not for everyone, Twitter will still be around, there's Cohost and more will come.
But I see a common misconception about Mastodon.
Want to go back to the old Twitter design (the good old one) but stay in Mastodon?
Try the Halcyon front-end https://halcyon.mstdn.social/
Want to try something different?
Try HyperSpace https://hyperdon.herokuapp.com/
You may be aware that there is something called the #Fediverse.
But do you know about all the different types of applications that run on the Fediverse?
I made this visual to give myself and others something to point at when explaining "the big picture".
You may be surprised by how many services beyond Mastodon there are to explore.
Download it for free here and use as you please:

That post also has links to all the different applications.
The lesson to take from the big layoffs at Twitter and Facebook is this: "The job will never love you back." No matter how much effort you put in, no matter how clever you are, no matter how long you've committed yourself to $COMPANY, when push comes to shove, you're just a replaceable part in the machine.
Keep your weekends and your evenings. Leave your bugs at work. Your time is for you, and your boss won't send you flowers.
To all mastodon admins:
Hi! I’m Evan Phoenix, the primary author of puma, the ruby webserver that powers mastodon!
Please reply or DM me if you need tuning help! I’ve got no officiation with the mastodon, just want to see you succeed!
(Quick Tip: set WEB_CONCURRENCY to core count * 1.5 and then tune MAX_THREADS. High thread values will see diminishing returns!)
