If I wanted to get excommunicated by the Catholic church, how would I go about doing that? (I'm an atheist)

@jeffcliff @niplav You can tell the local priest that you want to leave the church. He will tell you the address to contact. Your wish to leave will be registered. But: the baptism will not be undone. If you are really an atheist, you can of course be thoroughly indifferent to what the church says about it.

@boromir @jeffcliff
okay, that seems reasonable

i was thinking more about what unhinged stuff i would have to do for the catholic church excommunicate me in its own impetus, without me asking them

i don't think i've heard about an excommunication in the 21st century, even for people who misused church assets, maybe even for the pedophiles?

@niplav @jeffcliff I think there is a misunderstanding: even those who are excommunicated remain members of the Church!

i knew that, but it's still the "principal and severest censure" for anyone in the church (barring execution?), so I'd assume this would be what happens to catholics who commit great spiritual wrongdoings
