overall, in 29 states you can get married immediately upon deciding to, but in 21 states you unfortunately have to wait.
other states have a waiting period between applying for a marriage license and receiving it. for SC it's 1 day; AK, DC, KS, MA, MI, MS, NJ, OR, PA, and WA, 3 days; FL, also 3 days *unless* the couple attends a marriage prep class; and MN and WI, 5 days.
fun fact: while most states let you do this immediately, several states have a waiting period between receiving your marriage license and actually being able to marry. DE, IL, and NY make you wait 1 day; MD, 2 days; and IA, LA, and TX, 3 days.
