so what i had in mind here was, ppl who picked sincerity are probably the kind that dislike @visakanv, and ppl who picked sarcasm probably dislike @eigenrobot

i guess ppl that dislike visa would say he's not actually sincere and ppl that like eigen would say he's not actually sarcastic but you know. words

a bunch of ppl hate them both for reasons i think i kind of understand(?) but idk where they'd fit on the poll. also most ppl around here seem to like them or are just indifferent. but anyways

i have a point here i promise

i picked those two guys in particular not to point at *them* specifically but in trying to gesture at two archetypes (sincere & sarcastic) that i hope can resonate

generally i'm observing that the really sincere/earnest and the really sarcastic/cynical do not get along. also they will probably think rather lowly of each other

notably,

naivety = sincerity but i don't like it
cynicism = sarcasm but i don't like it

generally when there are different words for a similar thing with opposite (good and bad) connotations, is it just a way to apply a normative judgment to the same thing?

most people actually get along just fine. but sometimes you see this dynamic when the contrast is especially large between two people or groups

like how postrat twitter reacts to normie techies, or people in my (business) school react to the humanities activist types

so to get to the bottom of this, the other day i was listening to eigen's podcast episode with visa and it struck me that i'd put them as representatives of these totally opposite archetypes in my mind, and it was oddly satisfying to hear them just get along with each other

i got to wondering, what would it take for a maximally earnest and a maximally cynical person to interact harmoniously?

the answer seems to be either "nothing, it's impossible" or "not much, just some common ground"

idk which

what makes you trust people? what makes you distrust people?

p.s. i'm trying to be as sincere as i can here with regards to this thing i'm thinking about and i feel a bit annoying now

that's probably bcs i'm the first type of person in the poll
