question of the day: can anyone remember if there were left-handed Moties?

Most absurdist-sounding criminal organization in _Star Wars_:

Life, to coin an expression, is carp.

Insofar as it's an endless-seeming struggle to climb the Dragon Gate and win the prize.

Since we're facing heavenward, all we can see are the few dragons that made it. It's easy to believe everyone's a dragon.

But in reality, most everyone's just another struggling carp.

Dear friends, if you should find yourself in a situation similar to mine, when you find yourself needing a means to join one length of PVC pipe end to end with another... don't do what I did, and innocently search for "PVC butt".

Most 3D printers out there run free #OpenSource software like #Marlin, #Octoprint, #Klipper, #Moonraker, #Mainsail, #Fluidd, #Kiauh, etc.

The fact that you paid for your 3D printer doesn't mean that any of that money reached the developers giving their time to create and maintain the software it runs.

The rule of thumb is that if you use free open-source software, please consider sponsoring the developers and maintainers of said software.

Thank you! 🙂

So, moments of fun: one of the major as-yet-unrewired circuits in our house (dating, house and circuit both, to the 40s) just blew: breaker won't stay set. Covers half the kitchen, the dining room, and the living room. Yay.

Guess the progressive rewiring plan just became the right-the-fuck-now rewiring plan.

Coming tomorrow: the history of frameslip rings, including the absolute Heath Robinson way of hiding them beneath the armor of capital ships.

I boosted this earlier, but thought it was worth revisiting.

The Traveller Map is one of the most unique and well-developed #TTRPG resources available. This is a talk given at TravellerCon 2023 by its creator.

It's an interactive website atlas of all of the worlds in Traveller's Third Imperium setting.

Even if you don't use the Third Imperium setting for Traveller. or even play Traveller, this is worth looking at.

There have been over 40 years of Traveller adventures and settings detailing various worlds, from various publishers. They're all here. You can zoom in on any sector, subsector, or world and get details.

More RPG universes should have something like this.

(Convenience, I suppose, as they provide the least awkward answers as long as you remember to match the right idea to the right question.)

One of the fascinating things the current discourse throws into sharp relief is the way in which the following ideas:

* self-determination: a people have the right to govern themselves as they please (even when the result is *not* a democracy)

and

* a people are not their government and should not be held responsible for its actions (even when it *is* a democracy)

manage to coexist in the same heads.

I remember back in the 1960s seeing an episode of Lost in Space with a Nom-nom-nom class ship. Spherical ship with a fat spire. Said spire split and opened like a petal. Then it ate the Jupiter 2.

Randomly rewatching _You Only Live Twice_, and, space friends, I’ve got to confess that I’ve a real soft spot for SPECTRE’s _Nom_-class capsule-eating capsule.

And it’s a proper tail-lander, too.

There are many things that I would do, were I adequately rich, but right now I would buy a month of time on the Las Vegas Sphere to play a looped video of someone banging frantically on the inside, screaming to be let out.

So, you “believe in science”, huh? Name even one hypothesis you’ve tested.
