Follow

I'm trying to follow disabled.social/@Lovelybug but when I put that in the search bar I just get "Could not find anything for these search terms". How do I investigate further?

@dfilan @Lovelybug It just weirdly worked the sixth time I tried it, after searching for another real person had failed and then randomly succeeded on a retry.

@dfilan @ciphergoth my mastodon doesn't even seem to have a search bar. I realise that sounds impossible but I've really looked in the app and browser versions

@Lovelybug @dfilan I'll try to take a look later but if it really doesn't have a search bar we should find you a better server!

@Lovelybug
Using other apps will have that functionality for you.
Some things are glitchy so whilst Tusky has a great interface and functionality for engaging with people it's prone to accidentally deleting posts mid-draft - seems to be a refresh bug. So I jump between a few apps.

It's worth looking and testing until you find the one that's right for you.

@dfilan @ciphergoth

@ciphergoth In general, the pattern is
https://<your mastodon instance>/@<their username>@<their mastodon instance>
so in this case,
schelling.pt/@Lovelybug@disabl

@metaweta Going to their instance, pressing follow, copying in the name from the button and pasting that into search reproduced the problem. But then the problem randomly went away on a later attempt.

@ciphergoth @metaweta When I tried going to the link last night it was extremely slow, so you may have just been experiencing mass migration-related growing pains.

@ciphergoth i just tried it, no results when using the exact wording in your OP, but worked when i prepended "https://", possibly that's required? lmk if you continue experiencing intermittent issues like this

@pee_zombie That prefix was present when I tried it, Mastodon stripped it for display.

@ciphergoth @pee_zombie I'm not 100% that this is what is going on, but I feel like there are degrees of "graceful failure" with search as things get overloaded, where it sheds general text searches first but can still do exact lookups, but then eventually if it gets even more overloaded those fail too. This is just a purely outside view from observing which queries fail and which succeed, and when.

@moultano @ciphergoth interesting... schelling.pt doesn't actually have full-text search configured just yet, so mb that's contributing? also unsure, i'll have to look into the metrics to see if I can spot anything off
