kids are cowards. i shot hundreds of bullets straight through the monster that lives in my closet all without cracking a sweat

& I'm not going to claim we understand hormones (or the rest of biology) perfectly, & I'll definitely be a bit hesitant about the first iteration of artificial wombs, but again — purely functional concern. not sure if we're good enough *yet*, but I have no doubt we'll get there.

Show thread

I think some people really underestimate the role that hormones play in our subjective emotional experience. a lot of that "je ne sais quoi" that feels sacred and irreplaceable about so many things is just your mind on hormones. lots and lots of hormones.

Show thread

perhaps this makes me a materialist? 🤔 I think, if we deconstruct what happens in the womb to its basic components, and replicate everything exactly (hormone flow, nutrient flow, etc), the artificial wombs will function just as well as real ones & produce healthy, happy babies.

Show thread

yeah, I completely understand the horror/disgust at the thought of artificial wombs. but my concerns are purely functional — if they actually replicate the in-womb care, if there's nothing missing that fucks up the baby, I'm 100% fine with them, and overjoyed for them to exist.

when other people don't seem to understand what seems to be "obvious" to you did you consider that the problem may be a lack of imagination on your part rather than theirs
