I feel simulated

artificial constraints resolve the paradox of choice and empower one to build towering crystalline structures

RT @95thoughts
@pee_zombie A lack of constraint is paralyzing

how many electronic artists have produced something on par with the best classical composers, despite not having the bounds of their instruments? the constraint of the instruments confine the scope of their work to that peers can build on

an evil version of each of us lives in our haters minds rent free, all our actions parsed thru the lens of its evilness; there is no purer motivation than that of the low-res simulations others run of us

what would the evil version of you be up to you think

could be real*** ffs

tbh it's kind of hilarious when I make a typo in the first fuckin twet

we all find out own optimal point in the space of epistemic postures, depending on our respective goals, constraints, and risk tolerances. it's only to be expected.

I just wish that some of us wouldn't act like my bargain is unreasonable.

Show thread

personally, I'm a bit of a risk-taker in this domain; I'm willing to accept the possibility of creating cognitive blind spots in exchange for gaining the ability to really plumb the depths of our cosmological uncertainty

for many others, it's the wrong choice, which is fine!

Show thread

in many senses, it's an irrational one. from an epistemic risk management perspective, it's the wrong choice; a sort of metaphysical Faustian bargain

a bargain made at the altar of reason itself; which do you value more, robustness or incisiveness? ultimately you must choose.

Show thread

in some circles, such as a certain sort of rationalist, this is considered anathema; by permanently shutting off exploration of certain rhetorical branches we take on risks with massive potential downside

the thing is, it's a bet; a well-reasoned one, but a gamble nonetheless

Show thread

after all, don't we have an obligation to consider every possible explanation for phenomena, to be open minded?

no! we absolutely do not! and by making that choice explicitly, we exchange options for power

willingly taking on constraints is a pro move

this may sound rather uninteresting at face value, but if you think through the consequences it easily discredits every single possible supernatural theory of action, as they all rely on some nondeterminstic mechanism

some may say I'm being intellectually dishonest in this way

Show thread

I'm so completely sure of this that I'm willing to stake the entirety of my reputation on it, which is rather important to me, as someone who purports to be some sort of intellectual

how am I so sure? bc my article of faith is that the universe is comprehensible & deterministic

Show thread

I really wish more of us would accept that it's ok to base your belief system in a bedrock of unshakable, unquestionable, faith

it's fine, really! the trick is in choosing the right axioms, which is harder than it sounds.

for ex, i have never once believed magic could be really

this probably what y'all see me as when I talk personal responsibility and ADHD being fake

however, gender people start from a very different set of assumptions, namely that everyone is deeply interested in everyone else

this makes simple polite disinterest a much more heinous act than the other norm would consider it to be

how can this be reconciled?

it can't

Show thread

the cultural chasm is just too great, and may just be inherently impossible to bridge due to its nature. polite Western society is built on principles of tolerant apathy; the default assumption is that no one gives enough of a fuck about anyone else to bother insulting them

Show thread

the unfortunate thing is that mostly anyone this thread is describing will (quite intentionally) fail to understand why this behavior is (correctly) perceived as a threat, as to them, assuming pronouns is just as offensive as assuming a black person is a servant

doctor, I've been feeling extremely online, I think I'm catholic now and am terrified of seed oils. what do I do?

simple, just go outside and touch grass. hyperstition is powerless before nature's Lindy beauty

but doctor, I'm Zeno, & can never reach grass, only approach it!
