the nature of life is to ceaselessly struggle against entropy, to desperately fight for survival in a cold inhospitable universe, carve out a niche from the chaotic cosmos; this is élan vital, life force, spiral power, w/e you call it; the will to go on.

this ideological attractor is a dangerous tendency among the spiritually nihilistic, those who live by fear instead of hope; too many of the brilliant people I know are stuck in this developmental dead end; this degrowth mindset is the seed of the antispiral

if any of you are baby and currently thinking about this, please do not take out massive loans just bc people tell you it's the right move; it very rarely is. there's almost certainly a better option for you, even tho reputation feels like the most important thing in the world.

had I known what I do now I would have almost certainly gone to a cheaper school, maybe even completed my degree without the looming financial spectre over my head

I don't regret going due to the people I met and the experiences it exposed me to, but it was an expensive lesson

far from the first to say this but it's incredibly fucked that we push kids into massive debt without first properly educating them regarding
a. what debt is and how it works
b. what the purpose of college is
c. what their other options are
d. how this will constrain their future

the most frustrating part about dropping out of college for me was that I still had to pay my student loans, which I took out as a stupid 18 yr old who had no idea what the fuck he was getting into

well, I've finally paid it all off and can close the book on that era of my life

this is also where I've arrived; being an incorrigible technocrat I'm also sorely tempted to advocate for complex proposals which COULD work, but have been forced to admit such are unviable in today's undergoverned (and misgoverned) world. all that's left is defending liberties.

does USD have no gas fees, or are they paid ahead of time thru taxation which is then used to finance the US military, aka the consensus layer for fiat currency?

memes are ephemeral physically-embedded informational patterns we often acquire inadvertently from propaganda engines and can spread to others through speech acts; this does not differ in any real significant way, besides being easier to see. in fact, these are much less virile.

never shy away from learning something far from your core competence, nor from underpinning your trust with evidence; both practices will make you a more effective collaborator in the long run

Show thread

thru thus process I've learned the value of having skilled collaborators in domains you're only minimal familiar with, but still enough to check their work; the trust they earn professionally filters back out to the interpersonal realm as well, building stronger relationships

Show thread

there'd a russian saying: доверяй но проверяй, translated as "trust, but verify"; this has very much been a motto for me, and has been quite instrumental thruout the torturous process of learning to delegate work to others, which I've always struggled with, having high standards

Show thread

I've found that I can build much deeper trust in someone's competence thru iterated monte carlo output validation than by simply trusting them based on character or recommendation; this validated trust allows me to release cognitive load which would otherwise be spent worrying

Show thread

in the real world, not only is it quite rare to find business collaborators you trust on the level of close friends/family, but those too are capable of making mistakes; is it not then an act of kindness to release the from the burden of perfection thru mutual accountability?
