I have a Ph.D in #ComputerAlgebra and am in charge of the care and feeding of a number of /heavy/ subsystems in Maple. So, sometimes I do important work, like going through the #pokemon type advantage graph and look for five type subsets that are isomorphic to the graph of Rock-Paper-Scissors-Lizard-Spock. There is exactly one.

If you're an organisation that wants to participate on the fediverse, you really need to be running your own Mastodon instance.

Most of the Mastodon infrastructure right now is being run by individuals or small groups, for the community.

Trying to put your "official account" on community infrastructure is extremely rude.

It’s interesting that the biggest communication challenge facing Mastodon communities is explaining that it’s basically a protocol and a network of independent, interconnected servers, which is what the Web, e-mail, even DNS and most of the fundamental services we use on the internet are, and always were.
It just illustrates just how much ‘Big Tech’ proprietary social media platforms swallowed up and walled off, if it’s now difficult to explain what the internet actually is!

I have become this person in my group of friends and I am so ashamed of myself.

For all it's advantages and faults, #Mastodon was not built to be a *new* Twitter. It was built to be *not* Twitter.

That distinction is important.

Hey, if you want to be "verified" on the fediverse as being _actually you_, you don't need some third party to verify you or to check some list.

Got a domain you own, that's obvs you?

Paste `<a rel="me" href="https://your.server/@your_username">Mastodon</a>`into the html on that domain, add that domain to your profile links, bam, verified at least as comprehensively as a lot of folks on birdsite.

I've been posting a lot about Mastodon in the last days. Fact is, we're creating it together. Old users AND new.

My goal is to make the new users aware that we old users are often here because we HAD to switch away from the overload and hate of corporate social media, seeking the relative quietness and seclusion of the Fediverse. Many of us fear that if the climate here changes for the worse, we'll have to leave again.

It's about being inclusive. To old AND new users.
