tbf inlining the error condition as a return value, rather than by breaking control flow (exceptions) is cool

multiple return is cool, but unfortunate you can't explicitly treat them as the tuples they are

composition & extension methods (a la C#) are cool

instantiators too

are google SREs really this allergic to whitespace? how hard is it to press a few extra keys

semantic capitalization?? are you trying to increase alcohol sales, or

wtf is a "tag"??

go is a language only a systems engineer could love

a pile of features & shortcuts duct-taped together, seemingly without thought to any sort of higher-level scheme or conceptual elegance

yes i'm only halfway into the tutorial no i will not withhold judgement

consider, perhaps, how inconsiderate it can be, to present yourself illegibly, forcing others to work harder to parse your message; do you not care about your content? is your form more important to you than the time and energy of your counterparty?

standards exist for a reason

Show thread

to claim that being expected to control one's self, temper expression to fit affect within standard norms, is harmful or oppressive, is a bit of a reach. this is a childish social regression, another instance of the pendulum overcorrecting.

maybe your personality doesn't matter.

there's nothing inherently wrong with this, either. there should be space in society for ecstatic experiences, ideally guided by a shaman. some religions provide for this, such as pentecostals with their speaking in tongues.

but this does not belong in the professional sphere.

Show thread

this is a form of ecstatic glossomania, wherein the speaker is so overwhelmed by their emotions that they lose control of their speech; they are effectively babbling, like a child, in sheer ecstatic expression, channeling the feelings without much temperance. many such cases.

short on group chats lately. if you're in a good one feel free to add me for a daily share of bad memes and flora/fauna photography. I might leave after a day or two if the vibe isn't for me but want to check out some of the options. thanks pals

I get a little burst of self-actualization every time I go to add one of you to a list and find that you're already on it; time-symmetric alignment of judgment across selves builds confidence in my intuition

this is what becoming an adult entails; this is self-awareness, knowing where your boundaries lie and that anything past them is outside of your control, and of no import, if your own needs are met. split the world into you and not-you, and stop trying to control the latter.

its desirable that no one require assistance, so that we all participate in society as equals

ofc, this is an unreachable limit, but we should strive to approach it asymptomatically

a basic govt option should be provided, but with the understanding that one is to grow past it

Show thread

the goal of society is to help people level up to the point where they need less explicit social assistance, and are able to provide for themselves by using the market. this is what parenting is; limiting the actions of a child until such a time that they become self sufficient

weather people having more freedom is natural and good, contrary to popular belief; consider that actions are typically restricted in order to make someone more legible, to fit them into a management scheme. why? so that they can be categorized and helped, a la welfare programs

do most even care about this? should they? is this hierarchy orthogonal to, or a component of, the traditional one? you can't get very far in modernity without some amount of digital competence, and this is unlikely to change. software is eating the world, and we need to keep up.

Show thread

how many have even most of these? the last two are inherently inaccessible to the non-technical; no-code solutions attempt to change this, but I have my doubts

even the "safe place"; what is that, for most? surely not their phone home screen, what with all the attention-sapping

Show thread

what is the digital hierarchy of needs? perhaps:

food (afford power & devices)
shelter (retreat to a safe place, unmonetized)
connection (access & transmit information freely)
actualization (modify the built environment)
sovereignty (control your hardware, software, OS)

Show thread

if you can't even understand the ways in which you're being corralled & milked for your resources, given the illusion of choice and control, buy channeled down a predetermined set of paths

how can you begin to fight back, to wrest back your agency? your basic needs are unmet

how do you navigate a space you can't see or conceptualize, one which you don't have the tools to visualize or interact with directly? how to situate yourself in it, build a home base, a homestead, from which you venture out into the woods?

this is why the corps can control us
