this is considered massively unkosher to say in many circles, esp. left-leaning progressive American ones; it gets one branded problematic & toxic. a major reasons i came to twitter was to find better circles.

it can be rather hard to encourage personal responsibility nowadays.

Show thread

however, this is unreasonable; i'd say, "so long as scarcity remains", but lets be real, even after that, there will be people who insist on being upsetting

so, if the world cannot be made as soft as you'd like your internal environment to be, what is left?

to toughen up.

Show thread

they're effectively externalizing responsibility for managing their emotions to their environment, by equating "me not being upset" with "the environment not being upsetting"

this is understandable, for small children! for adults, not so much

some want their world to be soft

Show thread

any reasonable adult knows the correct answer is obviously 2, and if you have to ask why, you probably wont like my profile very much and should probably leave it

now, why are so many smart people saying the answer is 1? bc they dont believe its possible for them to not get hurt

Show thread

i see we're talking about autists being annoying today

ftr: autists are annoying. this is non-controversial. get over it.

the real Q is whether its the responsibility of:
1. others to not think/say theyre annoying, or
2. the autists in question to maintain their own boundaries

remember back when we were all arguing about this? that was fun. let's find something new to yell about. perhaps there's another scissor statement available in these tests

just realized that the collectivist approach is v similar to the female money allocation strategy (see linked quiz); do you optimize for the most money overall, or for fairness at the cost of the overall pie?

unironically think this is patriarchy (good)

while material scarcity remains (& it still does, esp. considering logistical difficulties), it's simply delusional to imagine that its possible to operate a civilization w/o "unfair" distinctions based on the lottery of birth; some people are much more skilled than others

Show thread

the thing about opposition to ranking/grading is that its reducto ad absurdum is a world quite similar to that which hard collectivists desire; w/o a way to determine priority in a resource constrained world, everyone gets an equal split of a single much smaller pie

I'm often surprised by what does well and what flops; things I think are boring throwaway tweets like the sleep thing get lots of engagement, while things I find interesting and care about (like the QT) are completely ignored

I wonder how much of a factor post time is here 🤔

Show thread

damn I feel like I unlocked an achievement, several hours with exactly 0 engagement. I wonder what about this sort of content causes this? is it overly technical in a niche subject? does it make no sense somehow? or is it simply just boring

these effects, + the natural tendency of traders to differentiate assets so as to capture price-insensitive consumers are likely to lead to a tiering of the crypto markets, which will set the stage for credit ratings to make it into crypto, as larger institutions seek credibility

Show thread

the continuous furor over BTC's energy usage, as well as anti-China sentiment, may lead users to seek out "proveably-ethical" UTXOs, ie mined using "green power" & by miners not in China

this may generate demand for UTXO-provenance verification services, which certify origin

Show thread

this is yet another step towards the unfungification of supposedly-fungible cryptoassets like BTC; there already exists a gray market for "unmixed" UTXOs, as certain institutions are not willing to incur the potential risk that they'll be dinged for potentially abetting ML/TF

in its simplest form, "privilege" just means "this is a form of advantage some people have over others that they many not necessarily even realize is a valid dimension of inquiry"

everything else is culture war nonsense overlaid on top of it
sociology isnt ALL bad
just mostly

alright seems like a lot of you dont realize this so it needs to be said

i'm using "privilege" here not in the dumb culture war sense wherein it refers to the oppression olympics

but rather as a simple term with analytic utility, w/o all the irritating implications
