With respect, ask yourself if all countries have similar or identical forms of public administration. (Having changed countries a couple of times, I can guarantee you that they don't.)

And I can also promise you that no such list exists.

You may think that this implies some terrible, fundamental dysfunction in American public administration, and by most standards you'd be right, but that doesn't mean it's not the case.

@mattwilcox

You appear to be under the impression that there’s some master list of US citizens somewhere, or some universal documentation that all of them have.

Voter registration lists - really citizen-domiciles-within-the-voting-area lists - exist because there’s literally no other way to get this information.

Why are they called 'fact checkers' and not 'defibillators'?

Today, in an attempt to explain the close relationship between muse (internal AI assistant/constant companion) and soph in emotional rather than technical terms, my brain ended up at

"...and this is my internal life-mate, Silent Bob."

@Dandelion

Well, someone's come up with an interesting interpretation of "no free speech for corporations".

@isaackuo @Dandelion

They have those (well, sort of, it's not water in the pipes - it's refrigerant; cooling water as an intermediate step would kill efficiency) already. They're called "mini-splits" - one outdoor compressor powers multiple indoor units - and are increasingly popular these days.

Next time we need to do AC replacement, we'll probably be getting one here.

@synlogic

I may be willing to reconsider this position after, oh, a century or so of absolutely impeccable and fully documented trustworthiness.

@synlogic

Ironically, in my SF my major protagonist polity does maintain the position of "freedom to speak is not freedom to deceive", which is a very appealing position when you have a blank sheet of paper and imaginary people.

Here and now? I am _absolutely_ confident that nothing could please the serial pathological liar class more than giving them the authority to define legally-permissible truthiness.

re: uspol

@dashdsrdash

If that datum is correct - and it's a poll, so we have adequate room to hope that it isn't - then I think our energies are much better spent on figuring out how to live in a country run by and for a slim majority of Nazi shitheads.

Staged combustion implies the existence of much superior authentic combustion.

uspol

According to the last poll I saw, over 50% of Republicans and over 60% of Democrats believe that the First Amendment guarantees us too many rights; i.e., that when it comes to civil liberties, we need less of them.

Anyway, tell me again how voting for your major party will protect us all from the scourge of fascism?

burning book-burners

While I'm at it, it also angers me a great deal that deploring the library-burning in the UK puts me on the same side as people who were conspicuously silent when people they liked occupied and severely damaged a library over here.

Some of us have a consistent position that _any_ people who so much as breathe hostile intent near a collection of books should be literally set on fire, thank you so very much.

(But at a distance, obviously, so they don't disturb the readers.)

Seeing a lot of "no-one holds a principled anti-riot position" and "everybody's in favor of riots under the right circumstances" going around recently.

Gentles all, let me assure you that should you manage to throw a riot in favor of everything I love and against everything I despise, I will _still_ demand that you all be bayoneted.

As, indeed, a matter of principle.

(I am so _very_ done with "we must destroy civilization in order to save it"-shaped ideas.)

Having read a thread on here concerning the length of time we flew the Shuttle with an (old, heavy) secondary teletype, I'm feeling pretty confident we can find mass in the budget for a 4.5 lb space-naginata on future less mass-constrained vehicles.
