The ACLU liberating facts from the oppression of rational observation.
After all, it's just as much a matter of personal identity, isn't it?!? Alternative facts, maybe?

So I started following @chemelia and then I discovered @AgathaSorceress and now I'm following both because my daughter (1 month old) is also called Amelia & she's so cute and it's a bit weird but also nice.
@Navertal @jdp oh this *is* interesting! It seems that network effects are different among the two types of apps: for messengers, I can easily use several along each other, but for microblogs - much less so.
Relatedly, existing group chats seem to be the main reason why people stay with WhatsApp - or have always used Signal

@meowski perhaps part of the current effort of banning everything that people might use to do Bad Stuff. (e.g. https://twitter.com/element_hq/status/1355465650114846720?s=19 )
Cisco's own VPN tool has a filter built-in that automatically detects, blocks, and reports Bad Stuff, so it's fine. 👀
@meowski no context, instant follow.
@urshanabi Well that's nice too. :)
Yes. That's what it is. Absolutely. Please keep calm and HODL. Maybe.

Late to the party, but TIL that there are people out there who actually believe that some other people, who happen to be of jewish faith, use directed energy weapons to cause natural disasters from orbit.
(Turns out it prob wasn't their fault https://forward.com/opinion/463295/the-jewish-space-laser-agency-responds-we-didnt-start-the-fire/)
@urshanabi lucky you!
(It's not that ppt is good; it's still annoying as hell. It's good for what it is.)
What do you use for presentations?
@urshanabi A friend & avid linux / FOSS advocator told me that impress (presentation tool) is essentially at the level of Office 2000 and unusable once you know recent PowerPoint.
I think it's all about the details: for example, do objects snap to each other the way the user expects them to? Do the graphs come with pretty defaults? Etc.
Performance also wasn't stellar, though this might've changed, and ms is also a bit weird in this department. (Formulas in ppt, I'm falling into a rant hole)
@jdp @Navertal Interesting, so you're both saying that the two platforms "mean" different things to you?
That makes sense to me. At the same time, I feel this should ALL go to mastodon in the long run, if only because the tech is obviously better. (decentralization matters)
I wonder if this desire for separate "modes" might be satisfied once we can define complex "sub-communities" or "fora" in masto. E.g. this thread: https://social.coop/@bmann/105646086938187583
