you ever have a dream about imaginary people with whole elaborate life stories

and then wake up and forget all about them

turns out firefox has a setting where you can change the default text and bg color, i had it set to night mode but it turns out the site uses my default text color but *not* my default bg color

easily fixable for most of the test but not for the timed anagram section

seems about right

circumstances make me think its a bit low (was doing this while eating, somewhat tired)

the ratio of how good this tea smells to how good it tastes is a tragedy

almost as bad as coffee

or maybe i just need a social group to enforce doing high-effort/high-reward things?

this worked well when i was a kid, then i never really figured out how to get a good social group to keep the momentum

and the hard stuff *really is* a lot more fun! every time i go, "dang i should do this more often"!

maybe all those people complaining about how the internet has destroyed our attention span were right after all

Show thread

for me 'wanting' is like a sort of compulsion, like i slowly just find myself doing things i don't particularly enjoy because even though the fun reward is small it's fast and takes barely any effort

but the effortful stuff requires me to actually work for my fun

Show thread

want/don't enjoy:
some addictive video games
reading bad webfiction
scrolling through twitter
engaging in culture war

don't want/enjoy:
cleaning
cooking (for myself, i find it easy to cook for a group)
reading difficult/serious things
prepping for d&d

Show thread

now i'm thinking about the difference between wanting to do something and enjoying doing something

please give me examples of things you either enjoy doing but don't want to do or things you want to do but don't enjoy doing

Lots of people suffering from allergies and pollen right now. We should compile a thread of tips and tricks for dealing with the seasonal stuff - I'll start.

I've heard that eating local honey can help.

i wonder what's the most batshit insane way I could use technical language on here before I get called out for it

this includes the ones you hold most sacred

this includes the ones that protect those who you care about

this includes the ones that keep society functioning

Show thread

everything good in life was made by crazy people with no respect for societal norms

to the extent that you want nice things, you have to let people flagrantly violate social norms

It’s funny how Y2K is remembered as an overblown hoax and not as “for fucking once we saw a problem coming in advance, actually dedicated sufficient time and resources to solving it, and a crisis was averted before it happened.” Makes me wonder how people would think of Covid if we had handled it well.

re: #politics

It falls into the same problem that most "causes" fall into - extremism for the sake of identity in some form or fashion. While it isn't meant to be political, it's obvious that any measured position can be co-opted for political ends. When that happens, there tends to be either a revolutionary or reactionary response, which drives the feuding sides further apart. The quicker the cycle of response, the quicker the radicalization of "sides" evolves. It's most blatantly seen in the political realm these days - and the social medias du jour are what drive the speed of the cycle.

Instant hot takes are an artificial impetus to drive that cyclical process faster and faster. If you want less radicalization - in any part of your life - slow down and think about things. This is one area where you can make a contribution. Wait a day or two before you comment - on anything. It'll still be there when you do, or be proven irrelevant; usually the latter.
