Noticing that I’m more likely to gravitate strongly toward disciplines once I can place its theory into a historical narrative.

Began to study networking protocols after reading STS-laced histories of the development of TCP/IP and the OSI protocols.
Am now invested in becoming a decent chess player after learning about the succession of schools of chess theory.

Seeing how domain knowledge accretes over time makes it easier to engage fields that would otherwise seem too complex to approach.

@pee_zombie @StevenFan I’m going to look for these on my grocery run tomorrow

Local government websites with terrible interface design as a form of grassroots resistance to high authoritarian legibility standards

@StevenFan Anybody seen signs of life from the @refactorcamp.org quadrant?

@pee_zombie @StevenFan What brands have you had to date, and how would you rank them

We must know

@protoneutype turning off all twitter notifications, including badges, was one of the best decisions I made with my twitter account.

@parafactual “healthy alternative” what is wrong with me, excuse me, I’m going for a walk

@parafactual Amarok’s Awoo Mode is a healthy alternative, find-replaces all instances of “toot” with “awoo”

@parafactual look, I’m not going to say one way or the other

But I’ve been liberally muting anybody who shows up in my federated feed whose posts actively dim my interest and I’ve been muting a lot of people from that server

Mostly I'm thrilled about this blossoming of Twitter alternatives because it means I might hear something new when people use hamfisted media comparisons to explain what The Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon is kind of like

@parafactual Anyone I follow! That’s not many people yet, though - I’m focusing more on following the activity on Schelling than following people directly.

@WomanCorn haven’t seen the Mastodon v Pleroma debates, what am I missing?

Beginning to get a feel for the federated ecosystem dynamics. It makes sense that different servers would have distinct cultures to them. Noticing headier content from extropian and lots of shitposting from poa

@pareinoia at least it’ll shift the axis from left/right to top-down/bottom-up. Would give the libertarian-leaning left- and right-of-center more common ground. Maybe they’ll even start hanging out more.

@nerdposterino @locus Click on the globe icon (labeled "Federated", if you're desktop) in your menu! It'll show the combined timelines of all the Mastodon servers this one is connected with.

@locus Hey, yeah, I think I’m for this. I’m not positive which servers you’re talking about, but I see cacophony when I look at the global feed and am generally in favor of whatever increases the ratio of interesting conversation to unintelligible/uninteresting shitposts.

Look, a lot of relationships, romantic or platonic, don’t last that long. Even so, a good general rule of thumb re: anybody you would spend time with for the sake of their company is to try your best to leave them in better condition than you found them.
